All The Mini Golf Courses in Myrtle Beach, SC

Matthew Linton became interested in the use of waterfront property in the resort town of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. When farmers first established the town of Myrtle Beach, the sandy, beachfront property seemed worthless. Because the soil was not conducive to growing crops, the land sat dormant. Eventually, trailer parks, strip malls, and small businesses including miniature golf courses were built. In fact, so many mini golf courses were built that Myrtle Beach is now considered the World Capital of Miniature Golf.  While the sport of miniature golf is still holding its own, members of the beachside community have seen the courses give way to much more profitable uses of the land.  It is feared that the mini golf course will go the way of the Drive-in Theatre.

With this possibility in mind, Matthew Linton set out to document the courses that remain.  A standard game of golf has a regulation play time of four hours to complete an 18-hole course.  As it turns out, within the limits of Myrtle Beach (North Myrtle Beach and Myrtle Beach proper) there are exactly 18 operable courses that line the main drag through town (Kings Highway/Route 17).  On Tuesday, June 28, 2005, Matthew Linton began photographing every course on this route.  His first photograph was made at 7:28am and he finished at 11:30am.
